Knitting is not just for grandma anymore.
The group most interested in learning to knit or crochet now are women in their 20s and 30s.
Women are knitting or crocheting while they wait in the lobby of the doctor's offices, on lunch breaks or before they go to bed. Celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cameron Diaz pull out their needles while they take a break on the set.
'There's a lady I know who knits at stoplights,' said Becky Ogden, 23, of Pensacola, who has been crocheting and knitting for more than a year.
'I knit on my lunch breaks or on Sunday afternoons. It's better than sitting on a computer and having nothing to show for it,' she said.
The fiber crafts are the 'new yoga,' according to the Craft Yarn Council of America. Specifically, women ages 25 to 34 are the 'secret spark' that's fueling knitting and crocheting yarn sales throughout the nation.
'Women are discovering it's OK to like it,' said Mary Colucci, the executive director of Craft Yarn Council of America. 'It used to be thought of as women's work. They were expected to like it. Now women are seeing the value in it.'"
